Color inspection in Machine Vision

Checking colors with precision, speed and repeatability — fully automated.

Why color inspection is essential

Color inspection helps detect deviations in the production process at an early stage. If you produce, for example, tent fabric, you want every piece of fabric to have exactly the same color. However, subtle color deviations can occur due to wear or contamination. With our vision systems we detect these deviations automatically.

By using well-matched hardware — camera, lens and lighting — we minimize measurement errors. We often also use a reference standard (swatch) in the image, so deviations can be measured pixel by pixel.

The results can be shared live with BI platforms or process monitoring tools. Depending on your situation, we offer custom integrations for this or use industry standards such as Profinet or OPC-UA.

How does color recognition work?

The camera analyses images in color channels such as RGB or HSV. We also support color models such as CIE LAB and CEC for applications that require more precision or color perception. Depending on the application, we compare a color to a reference or measure the color transition across a surface. We correct for lighting effects and reflection.

By using color filters and polarized lighting, we significantly improve the reliability of color measurements. We can also implement custom integrations with existing or external BI solutions for live monitoring and logging.

Applications of color inspection

Some common applications include checking print quality on labels, color coding of products, the difference between raw and baked, or the correct color of plastic parts.

Color inspection can easily be integrated with machine integration or AI-driven decision making.
